Understanding the Property Tax System

Property taxes are local taxes that provide the largest source of revenue to local governments which are used to pay for schools, streets, roads, police, fire protection, and other services. Texas law serves as the foundation upon which local officials must follow in the administration of property tax. All appointed and elected officials must adhere to state law to ensure that values represent market value, are established in an equal and uniform manner, that the setting tax rates provides for input from the public, and the collecting taxes is uniform and efficient. Since Texas has no state property tax, the Legislature authorizes our local governments to assess and collect property tax. The state does not set tax rates, collect taxes, or settle disputes between you and your local governments.
